Musical Beings has introduced Tembo, an innovative drum machine featuring a distinct wooden chassis and a magnetic sequencing system. This unique design allows users to arrange beats by placing magnetic pucks, making music creation intuitive and accessible.
Co-founder David Davidov emphasized the goal of enabling immediate musical engagement, contrasting Tembo with instruments that have a steep initial learning curve. The device aims to help people experience music as an active pursuit rather than just a passive one.
Despite its beginner-friendly approach, Tembo is a capable instrument for experienced musicians. It boasts a five-channel, 16-step sequencer controlled by magnets, along with controls for swing, tempo, effects, and pattern length. Connectivity options include two USB-C MIDI ports for integration with DAWs or external gear, and audio recording via USB or stereo output.
The Tembo is battery-powered and includes a built-in speaker and microphone, functioning as a portable junior groovebox. Users can lay down musical ideas and beats, with a companion app available for further assistance. The product's Kickstarter campaign has successfully surpassed its initial funding target, with unit prices varying between approximately $360 and $450.
