California-based startup Telo is introducing the MT1, a compact electric pickup truck designed to challenge the prevalence of large vehicles in the US market. Resembling Japanese kei trucks, the MT1 features a unique cab-over design and a surprisingly spacious interior. Despite its small footprint, the truck offers a substantial 8,000lbs tow rating and a 96-inch bed.
The production Telo MT1 is projected to accelerate from 0-60 mph in approximately four seconds, showcasing the impressive power of its electric drivetrain. The company plans to offer two battery options, with the larger 106kWh pack estimated to deliver up to 350 miles of range. Telo is also innovating with its battery technology, building packs in-house with a focus on longevity and thermal management.
Addressing safety concerns, Telo has developed a novel front-end structure and hinge pillar, a significant engineering feat that took years to perfect and extensive virtual crash testing using AI. This innovative design aims to meet US safety regulations, a hurdle that has previously prevented kei trucks from being sold in the country.
With reservations open for a refundable $152, the Telo MT1 starts at $41,520. The company anticipates profitability around 5,000 vehicle sales within 24 months of deliveries, which are targeted for 2027. Telo's approach to urban transportation aims to provide a capable and fun electric pickup alternative for city dwellers.
