Telesat Adds Military Ka-Band to Lightspeed
18 Mar
Summary
- Lightspeed constellation will allocate 25% capacity for military Ka-band.
- Global service for Lightspeed is now expected in early 2028.
- The shift to military frequencies is a modest cost increase.

Telesat is reconfiguring its Lightspeed broadband constellation to allocate 25% of its capacity to military Ka-band frequencies. This adjustment, announced March 17, is driven by increasing global demand for defense communications and a shifting geopolitical landscape. The initial 156 satellites will now incorporate dedicated Mil-Ka spectrum, replacing an equivalent amount of commercial Ka-band frequencies.
Global service for the Lightspeed constellation is now projected for early 2028, a delay attributed partly to the readiness of crucial satellite components. This strategic pivot aims to enhance resilience, security, and throughput for defense clients, especially in regions like the Arctic. The addition of Mil-Ka aims to improve interoperability with existing military systems.
Despite the changes, Telesat assures that ample commercial Ka-band capacity remains available for aviation, maritime, and other markets, with no impact on stringent service level agreements. The company's advanced system architecture allows for dynamic allocation of capacity to meet high-demand areas. This strategic move is also supported by growing government contracts and partnerships, including those in the United States and South Korea.
