Telegram Faces Global Bans Amid Crime and Disinformation Claims

Telegram, a messaging app known for its privacy features, is currently facing significant regulatory challenges worldwide. India recently imposed a ban until June 22, citing the app's involvement in a fraudulent scheme to sell fake leaked pages from a national medical college entrance exam. This move has caused widespread dissatisfaction among students and led to the cancellation of exam scores and a scheduled retest.

Globally, Telegram has been a tool for political dissent and evading authoritarian control, but it has also been flagged for its use in criminal activities and spreading disinformation. Russia, where founder Pavel Durov was born, has a history of banning and unbanning the app, citing security concerns and demands for access to encrypted messages, while also using the app internally.

In Ukraine, during the ongoing war, Telegram serves as a crucial information source but also raises concerns about Russian disinformation and spying. Consequently, Ukrainian officials have restricted its use on government devices. Meanwhile, in Europe, Norway has advised state officials against using Telegram on work devices due to national security risks. France has seen its founder, Pavel Durov, arrested and charged with various crimes for alleged failure to prevent illicit activities on the platform.

Brazil's Supreme Court has also banned Telegram at different times, citing non-compliance with orders to remove accounts spreading disinformation and threatening judicial figures. These actions highlight a global trend of governments attempting to control or restrict Telegram's operations due to its dual role as a tool for freedom and a platform for illicit activities.
