Summary
- New TCL laptop screen can refresh at 0.01Hz, one frame every 100 seconds.
- Screen technology uses 12 zones for variable refresh rates, saving energy.
- TCL estimates over an hour of extra video playback time due to low refresh rate.

Chinese manufacturer TCL has unveiled a revolutionary 14-inch laptop display featuring an astonishingly low refresh rate of 0.01Hz. This technology allows the screen to display a single frame every 100 seconds, a significant advancement from typical 1Hz panels aimed at conserving power.
The innovative screen utilizes 12 distinct zones, enabling variable refresh rates across different parts of the display. Users can watch videos at a standard 120Hz in one area while the rest of the screen remains at the energy-efficient 0.01Hz. TCL projects this capability could boost laptop video playback duration by more than an hour.
While TCL states the technology is ready for production, its widespread implementation depends on collaboration with software and chip vendors like Microsoft, Intel, and AMD. This partnership is crucial for enabling the dynamic switching of refresh rates. Additionally, TCL showcased a portable 28-inch trifold monitor expected to enter mass production next year, and an upgraded 8K 1,200Hz gaming monitor.
