Spot AI Manipulation: Google's SynthID Goes Public
8 Oct
Summary
- New tool detects AI-edited audio, video, and images.
- SynthID Detector works with content from Google, OpenAI, and others.
- Google emphasizes collaboration to combat AI manipulation.
The challenge of identifying AI-generated content has intensified as photorealistic forgeries become harder to detect. Google has now launched its SynthID Detector to the public, a tool designed to identify media manipulated using generative AI, including images, audio, and video. This expansion builds upon Google's previous work with SynthID, introduced in 2023 and enhanced in late 2025 to query Gemini about AI-created images. The standalone detector currently supports media from Google, OpenAI, Nvidia, and Kakao, with anticipated support from Apple soon.
Google stresses that addressing AI-generated content requires industry-wide cooperation. While Apple is adopting SynthID, it also utilizes its own Reference Image technology. Google's approach on its Pixel devices involves embedding C2PA metadata for original capture verification and SynthID for AI edits. User privacy is prioritized, with uploaded media processed in real-time and deleted after 24 hours. While other entities like OpenAI have their own verification tools, they may be limited in scope compared to SynthID's broader detection capabilities, marking a significant step forward in tracking AI manipulation.
