The preview of SteamOS 3.8.0 introduces substantial enhancements for Valve's gaming devices and broader handheld support. A key update for the Steam Deck LCD includes the addition of hibernation and "memory power down" modes, aimed at improving battery longevity during idle periods. This feature addresses a gap where some Windows machines previously offered longer sleep times due to self-hibernation.
Further improvements focus on user experience and device compatibility. Gaming mode on the Steam Deck now allows the use of Bluetooth headset microphones, a long-requested feature also available on Linux desktop mode since last year. The Steam Deck LCD also sees the re-enabling of Bluetooth Wake functionality, enabling power-on via wireless controllers.
The update extends its reach beyond Valve's own hardware, significantly broadening support for third-party handhelds. Devices from Microsoft, Asus, Lenovo, OneXPlayer, MSI, GPD, Anbernic, OrangePi, and Zotac are slated to benefit from improved power management and display features. Specific enhancements include processor power mode adjustments for the Xbox Ally and OLED color fixes for certain models.
Linux desktop modes are also receiving attention, with the integration of desktop HDR, VRR support, and per-display scaling. Gamers using Proton will experience improved windowing behavior. Audio capabilities are enhanced with HDMI surround sound detection, and the system benefits from an updated Arch base and graphics driver, preparing it for a more robust living room gaming experience.
