SpaceX Incinerates Hundreds of Starlink Satellites
2 Jul
Summary
- Over 260 Starlink satellites intentionally burned up recently.
- This is an increase from previous disposal periods.
- Concerns exist over ozone depletion from incinerated satellites.

SpaceX's Starlink constellation is seeing an increase in intentionally incinerated satellites, with 260 having burned up in Earth's atmosphere in recent months. The company reported to the FCC that these de-orbitings occurred between December 2025 and May 2026. This figure marks a rise from the previous six-month period.
Satellites are designed for a five-year operational life, necessitating constant renewal of the constellation. SpaceX has been de-orbiting older craft, with one period in late 2024 seeing 472 satellites removed. Astronomer Jonathan McDowell notes that 1,344 Starlink satellites have re-entered the atmosphere overall.
Concerns are growing that the vaporized satellites could release harmful, ozone-depleting gases. Researchers are urging further study, while some advocate for an environmental review. However, the FCC is reportedly considering exempting large constellations like Starlink from such assessments, prioritizing US space dominance.
