Starlink Mobile: 4Mbps Speeds Revealed for Satellite Calls
13 Mar
Summary
- Starlink Mobile offers data speeds of up to 4Mbps per beam.
- The service is best suited for rural areas due to beam coverage.
- Future upgrades aim to boost speeds significantly by 2027.

SpaceX's Starlink Mobile service is reported to offer data speeds of 4Mbps per satellite beam, according to a partner. This satellite-to-phone capability is primarily targeted for rural environments, as each 50-kilometer spot beam must share its bandwidth among users in that area.
While not a replacement for urban cellular networks, the 4Mbps speed is deemed adequate for services like WhatsApp video calls and sending video messages. This aligns with research from June 2025, which also estimated similar downlink capacities.
This technology enhances mobile coverage significantly, increasing it from 89% to 95% in the UK. However, the satellite signal's weakness requires outdoor use, as it cannot penetrate buildings, a limitation dictated by physics.
SpaceX plans a substantial upgrade in 2027 with second-generation satellites, aiming to increase download speeds to 150Mbps per user. Currently, Starlink Mobile is positioned as a complementary service to terrestrial networks.
