Spotify Fights AI Personas: New Labels Incoming
11 Aug
Summary
- Spotify will label AI-generated artist identities.
- AI Persona songs won't be recommended unless followed.
- Artists can self-declare AI personas starting now.

Spotify will begin implementing "AI Persona" labels to clarify when an artist's public identity is AI-generated. These new labels will be visible in search results, artist profiles, and playlists from mid-September. The goal is to ensure listeners know when an artist's persona is not a real person.
Once an AI Persona is labeled, their music will be excluded from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless the listener actively follows that persona. Artists can voluntarily declare themselves as AI Personas through the Spotify for Artists platform starting immediately. Spotify also plans to proactively identify and label "Likely AI Personas" soon.
This initiative aims to address listener feedback regarding transparency. If Spotify labels an account, the account holder will be notified and given an opportunity to self-disclose or appeal the classification. Spotify already uses "Verified by Spotify" badges for human artists and AI credits for music production, but the AI Persona label focuses specifically on the artist's public identity.
