SpaceX is reportedly aiming to conduct a technology demonstration for its proposed AI data centers in space by the end of 2025. This plan was revealed by individuals who attended pre-IPO investor presentations.

The company's S-1 filing, as reported, highlights that these space-based data center initiatives involve substantial technical challenges and utilize unproven technologies, with no guarantee of commercial success.

Artist renderings suggest these data centers would be constructed as large satellites, approximately 20 feet by 70 feet, featuring prominent solar panel wings to power the silicon necessary for training and running AI models.

While the concept of orbital server farms is considered feasible with existing technology, experts note the intricate nature of the undertaking and potential drawbacks. It remains uncertain if such an endeavor could compete effectively with established Earth-bound hyperscale data centers.
