SpaceXAI Faces Exodus: 50+ Staff Depart Amidst Culture Clash
15 May
Summary
- Over 50 researchers and engineers have left SpaceXAI since February.
- Key talent, including leaders in coding and world models, have departed.
- Rival companies like Meta are actively hiring former SpaceXAI employees.

SpaceXAI, formerly xAI, has seen a significant outflow of talent, with over 50 researchers and engineers departing since February. This exodus includes critical leaders in areas such as coding, world models, and Grok voice development.
Many former employees have been recruited by competing firms, including Meta and Thinking Machine Labs. Notably, at least 11 individuals have joined Meta, and seven have moved to Thinking Machine Labs. The core pre-training team has reportedly dwindled to a small number, raising concerns about the company's ability to develop advanced AI models.
The departures follow Elon Musk's acquisition of xAI in February and its subsequent rebranding to SpaceXAI. Reports suggest that Musk's demanding work culture, characterized by unrealistic deadlines for model training, has contributed to staff dissatisfaction and departures across his companies, including Tesla.
While some exits may be attributed to employees cashing out vested shares or anticipating future IPO liquidity, the cumulative loss of key personnel has cast a shadow over SpaceXAI's future development trajectory.
