SpaceX has secured Federal Communications Commission (FCC) authorization for its first Wi-Fi 7 router, designated as the UTR-261. This development suggests an upcoming enhancement for Starlink users, aiming to provide improved network performance. The UTR-261 supports the technical specifications for Wi-Fi 7, including 802.11be EHT20 and EHT40, which are designed to reduce latency and increase network capacity.
This new router follows SpaceX's Router Mini and is manufactured in Vietnam, with the FCC granting an exemption for foreign-made Wi-Fi routers for SpaceX. The device is intended for indoor use only and may feature Power over Ethernet (PoE) support alongside an AC adapter, along with multiple Ethernet ports and a USB-C port. Details regarding its release are pending, as SpaceX has requested confidentiality for certain documentation.
The introduction of the UTR-261 coincides with SpaceX's release of the lighter and more power-efficient V5 Starlink dish. While the V5 dish has slightly lower maximum speeds compared to previous versions, the integration with a Wi-Fi 7 router could significantly boost overall user experience. Starlink has also subtly updated its Residential 100Mbps plan, hinting at potential router upgrades for customers.
