The U.S. Space Force has awarded a significant $4.16 billion contract to SpaceX for a new program focused on sensing and tracking airborne targets from space. This initiative, known as the Space-Based Advanced Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI), is designed to create an interconnected system of systems. It will integrate space-based sensors, secure communication links, and ground processing capabilities.
The SB-AMTI program aims to foster closer cooperation among various entities within the government's space industrial base. The Space Force indicated that while SpaceX is part of the vendor pool, multiple awards are anticipated in the coming year.
This initial contract is projected to result in a constellation of satellites being deployed by 2028. This deployment is intended to provide the Joint Force with an early capability to address and eliminate operational blind spots. This follows a recent $2.29 billion contract awarded to SpaceX for a global satellite communications network.
