SpaceX Builds Its Own Power Plants for Texas Chip Fab
11 Aug
Summary
- SpaceX will build its own natural gas power stations and battery arrays.
- The chip plant requires stable power, making grid reliance impractical.
- Tesla's Megapacks are listed as a key milestone for 2026.

SpaceX has informed Grimes County officials that its new semiconductor fabrication plant, Terafab, will operate independently of the Texas power grid. The company intends to construct its own power stations, primarily natural gas-fired plants, supplemented by substantial battery storage systems. This decision stems from the extreme sensitivity of semiconductor manufacturing equipment to power quality.
Even brief voltage sags, imperceptible in a household, can disrupt lithography tools and scrap entire batches of high-value wafers. To ensure uninterrupted operation, SpaceX is integrating battery arrays, with Tesla's Megapacks identified as a crucial component for a gigawatt-scale installation slated for 2026. The company views these infrastructure constraints as the primary limitations on future AI growth.
This independent power strategy ensures that SpaceX's operations will not increase electricity costs for other Texas residents. Governor Greg Abbott's office previously confirmed the project, highlighting a $16.8 billion initial phase supported by state grants. The completed campus is projected to exceed 100 million square feet.
