13 May
Summary
- AI Camera Assistant suggests photo settings based on scene recognition.
- New larger sensor in telephoto camera enhances low-light performance.
- Phone includes a 3.5mm audio jack, a rare feature on modern smartphones.
Sony has launched the Xperia 1 VIII, a new flagship smartphone prioritizing advanced photography features. Central to its imaging capabilities is the AI Camera Assistant, driven by Xperia Intelligence. This system automatically identifies subjects, scenes, and weather conditions to propose ideal settings for color tone, lens choice, and bokeh effects, allowing users to apply suggestions with a tap.
The device incorporates a new 1/1.56-inch image sensor for its telephoto camera, reportedly four times larger than its predecessor's. This enhancement significantly boosts detailed image capture, especially in low-light environments, complemented by RAW multi-frame processing, HDR, and noise reduction.
Beyond photography, the Xperia 1 VIII offers a 6.5-inch OLED display and is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform. A distinctive feature for audiophiles is the inclusion of a 3.5mm audio jack. The phone will be available in Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold.
Pricing starts at 1,499 euros or £1,399 for the 12GB RAM/256GB storage model, with a 16GB RAM/1TB storage variant costing 1999 euros or £1,849. Pre-orders are open now, with devices expected to ship as early as June. This release is currently exclusive to Europe, as Sony has no immediate plans for a US launch. Early pre-order customers will receive Sony's WH-1000XM6 headphones as a complimentary gift.
