- AI aims to boost productivity without replacing human creators.
- PlayStation studios adopt AI for animation and upscaling tools.

Sony and Bandai Namco Holdings Inc. are engaged in a "collaborative pilot initiative" focused on generative AI's potential in video production. Sony President and CEO Hiroki Totoki described AI as an "amplifier of human imagination" that enhances speed and productivity, while reassuring that it will not replace artists. Initial results show significant gains in productivity, addressing challenges in consistency and controllability for creative professionals.
Within PlayStation, AI is being integrated to expedite game development cycles and enable more creators to enter the market. Hideaki Nishino, head of Sony Interactive Entertainment, noted that AI is expected to increase content volume while studios remain committed to high-quality output. Specific AI tools like Mockingbird are being used for facial and hair animation, augmenting the capabilities of studios such as Naughty Dog and Sony's San Diego Studio.
The PS5 Pro's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling tool also utilizes AI, with recent updates enhancing its effectiveness. This technology is anticipated to be a key feature for the PS6. Despite these advancements, Sony's fourth fiscal quarter saw a 46 percent downturn in PS5 sales, with 1.5 million consoles sold, amidst broader industry challenges like rising costs and memory shortages.
