Snapchat Shields Young Teens' Spotlight Posts

Summary
- Younger teens' Spotlight posts will be friends-only.
- New rules affect 13- to 15-year-old users on Snapchat.
- Concerns raised about unsafe content and unwanted contact.

Snapchat has announced new content-sharing protections for its younger users, specifically targeting those aged 13 to 15. As of June 10, 2026, Spotlight posts from this age group will be restricted to a "friends-only" audience.
This updated policy ensures that content shared by minors is primarily visible to their mutually accepted friends. Previously, users under 16 could post to Spotlight without direct attribution to their profile, offering a layer of anonymity. The company stated this allowed participation while shielding them from potential unwanted attention.
Under the new framework, minors identified as under 16 will be automatically placed in the friends-only sharing setting for Spotlight videos, regardless of their self-attested age. Teens aged 16 and 17 will continue to have the option for public sharing, albeit with enhanced safety measures in place.
These changes come amid ongoing concerns raised by youth advocacy groups. A recent survey indicated that a significant portion of teen users had encountered unsafe content or messages, including unwanted contact, bullying, and sexually suggestive material. More than 40% of those receiving unwanted messages suspected the sender was an adult.
Snapchat maintains that it has invested heavily in user safety, citing existing measures such as preventing friend requests from strangers and restricting messaging to only accepted friends or contacts. The platform also claims to issue warnings when minors begin chatting with newly added friends.
