Smart Toilet Seat Detects Heart Irregularities

Summary
- A smart toilet seat can accurately detect atrial fibrillation.
- Built-in sensors record heart's electrical activity for 30 seconds.
- A smartphone app analyzes data for signs of cardiac arrhythmia.

A new smart toilet seat, the HARO EKG-seat, developed by German company Hamberger Medical, offers an innovative way to detect atrial fibrillation (AFib), the most common heart rhythm disorder. This device integrates EKG sensors directly into a standard-looking toilet seat.
During a typical toilet visit, the seat records the heart's electrical activity for about 30 seconds. Subsequently, a connected smartphone application analyzes this data. The analysis aims to identify any indications of cardiac arrhythmia, providing a convenient method for monitoring heart health.
Researchers in the Hamberger Heart Study found the seat's 6-lead EKG system demonstrated a high agreement with conventional 12-lead medical EKGs. The study, which awaits independent peer review, suggests users can operate the seat easily for brief, regular health measurements integrated into daily routines.
Early intervention for AFib significantly improves patient outcomes. Experts note that devices like the HARO EKG-seat could be particularly beneficial for individuals at high risk of developing AFib, enabling targeted health parameter recording without explicit user reminders.
