GPU Waste Slashed: Unlock 7x User Capacity
16 Oct
Summary
- Up to 60% of GPU compute is wasted on recalculating context.
- NVMe flash is more economical for KV cache than DRAM.
- WEKA's solution can increase user capacity by 7x.
Large language models running on GPUs often experience significant inefficiencies, with up to 60% of compute time spent re-calculating context that has already been processed. This issue stems from how conversation history is managed in GPU memory. Alan McSeveney, field CTO at WEKA, explained that addressing this waste allows organizations to serve substantially more users using their current hardware investments.
The primary constraints faced by companies are budget, power availability, and data center space. These limitations hinder growth, driving the need to maximize existing capital expenditures. NVMe flash is emerging as a more economical and scalable solution for storing KV cache compared to expanding server DRAM, offering comparable or better performance at a lower cost.
WEKA's Augmented Memory Grid, part of its NeuralMesh storage software, centralizes KV cache across GPU servers. This approach enables sessions to resume on different servers without recomputing history. This optimization has led to a 7x increase in user capacity and a tenfold rise in token output, significantly improving efficiency over DRAM offloading.
