Singapore Cracks Down on Under-18s Accessing Risky Apps
2 Apr
Summary
- App stores in Singapore must now screen and block under-18s from downloading age-inappropriate apps.
- New rules apply to major app stores including Apple, Google, and Microsoft.
- Age ratings for apps can be inconsistent across different app stores.

App stores operating in Singapore are now mandated to screen and block individuals under 18 from downloading apps and games deemed inappropriate for their age group. This directive, effective since April 1, 2026, is part of the Infocomm Media Development Authority's Code of Practice for Online Safety.
The new regulations aim to establish protective measures at the entry point to apps, which have faced criticism for exposing children to harmful material, including violence, self-harm content, and cyberbullying.
Key app stores such as Apple, Google, Huawei, Samsung, and Microsoft must adhere to these guidelines. However, a significant challenge identified is the inconsistency in age ratings assigned to apps across these different platforms, potentially undermining the effectiveness of the new rules.
Age verification methods vary among app stores. While Apple and Microsoft prompt users to prove their age for 18+ rated apps, Google utilizes machine learning to estimate age. Samsung's Galaxy Store and Huawei's AppGallery also employ different verification processes, sometimes involving credit card details or facial scans.
