Singapore pioneers AV rules for safer roads
4 May
Summary
- Singapore seeks feedback on proposed autonomous vehicle regulations.
- New legislation will clarify safety, liability, and insurance for AVs.
- Punggol shuttle trials may expand to other Singapore locations.

The Singapore government is actively seeking public input on a proposed legal and regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles (AVs). The Ministry of Transport (MOT) aims to govern the use of AVs on Singapore roads more comprehensively.
This new legislation will incorporate lessons learned from current AV regulatory sandboxes and international best practices. It is designed to clarify safety regulations, liability, insurance, and enforcement regimes for AV operations, providing essential legal clarity for businesses.
The consultation follows the recent rollout of self-driving shuttle services in Punggol, which have been trialled for over half a year. These trials have allowed the government to study AV operations within Singapore's specific context.
Authorities are committed to ensuring AV safety while supporting innovation in the transport sector. If the Punggol trials are successful, plans are in place to expand AV trials to other locations across Singapore, including Sentosa, Tuas, and Mandai.
