Privacy Alert: FBI Bypasses Signal Encryption via Push Notifications
10 Apr
Summary
- FBI reportedly accessed Signal messages via iPhone's push notification database.
- Signal messages, even deleted ones, were viewable through this method.
- A simple app setting can block this loophole for enhanced privacy.

An investigation revealed the FBI could access messages from the privacy-focused Signal app. This was reportedly achieved by extracting data from an iPhone's push notification database, circumventing Signal's end-to-end encryption. The method allowed access to messages that had also been deleted from the user's device.
This vulnerability is not unique to Signal but affects any application utilizing push notifications. Messages displayed in these notifications technically bypass encryption safeguards. A straightforward solution exists within Signal's settings.
Users can navigate to Settings > Notifications > Notification Content and select 'No Name or Content.' This change ensures that message details are not visible in push notifications, requiring users to open the app to view content and closing the loophole exploited by the FBI.
