Samsung's Transparent Smart Glasses Debut
7 May
Summary
- Samsung subsidiary demoed waveguide smart glasses with transparent lenses.
- The glasses use OLED microdisplays from acquired eMagin subsidiary.
- Technology aims for consumer, military, medical, and industrial uses.

A subsidiary of Samsung Display presented waveguide smart glasses featuring transparent lenses capable of displaying video. These advanced glasses utilize OLED microdisplays from eMagin, a company Samsung Display acquired in 2023. The waveguide structure discreetly houses the micro OLEDs, beaming video content into the edges of the transparent lenses.
While a wearable prototype was not on display, the demonstration showed how the micro OLEDs can project detailed, transparent digital images onto a user's field of vision. Potential applications showcased included watching videos and accessing nutritional information. The technology employs 0.62-inch OLED microdisplays with a 1,280-by-1,024 resolution and high brightness.
The eMagin technology is being positioned for a wide array of uses, spanning consumer augmented and virtual reality, as well as critical military, medical, and industrial applications. Samsung Electronics, which previously spun off Samsung Display, is also reportedly developing its own smart glasses set for release later this year.
