Samsung Watch Predicts Fainting Before It Happens
7 May
Summary
- Samsung smartwatches may predict fainting using AI.
- Study showed 84.6% accuracy in predicting fainting.
- Feature aims to prevent injuries from falls.

A recent clinical study, a collaboration between Samsung and Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital, indicates that smartwatches might soon predict fainting spells.
The research utilized a modified Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, integrating an AI model with a photoplethysmography sensor to monitor heart rate variability. This system demonstrated an impressive 84.6% accuracy in predicting vasovagal syncope episodes within a five-minute timeframe.
Vasovagal syncope, a condition affecting a significant portion of the population, causes sudden drops in heart rate and blood pressure, leading to fainting. The potential for early detection could allow individuals to take preventative measures, such as finding a safe position, thereby significantly reducing secondary injuries.
While this faint-prediction technology is currently a clinical study, Samsung has expressed a commitment to innovation for healthier lives. This suggests the possibility of such features appearing in future commercially available Samsung Galaxy Watch devices, though not in the immediate future.
