Samsung Messages App Shutting Down Soon!

Samsung is discontinuing its native Messages application in July 2026. The company officially recommends that Galaxy phone users transition to Google Messages for their texting needs. This discontinuation affects users who have not had Google Messages set as their default messaging app since the Galaxy S21 series or who are not running Android 11 or earlier.

Users needing to switch can download Google Messages and set it as the default SMS application through its prompts or device settings. Google Messages offers advantages such as Rich Communication Services (RCS) and integrated Gemini features, including smart replies. However, the exact end date for Samsung Messages support may vary by device model.

Owners of older Samsung smartwatches, specifically the Galaxy Watch 3 or earlier models running Tizen OS, will experience a reduction in functionality. While they will still be able to send and receive text messages, their ability to view complete conversation histories will be lost after Samsung Messages is discontinued. Alternatives like Signal and WhatsApp are also available for users seeking different messaging experiences.
