Russia's Rassvet Laser Comms Outshine Starlink
30 Sep
Summary
- Rassvet uses laser channels for superior data transmission quality.
- It offers broadband internet and can operate without special terminals.
- Mobile devices will reportedly connect directly to Rassvet satellites.
Russia's new Rassvet low-Earth orbit satellite constellation is positioned to offer superior internet services compared to existing systems like Starlink. A key distinction lies in its use of laser communication channels, which reportedly enable higher speed and quality of data transmission than Starlink's current offerings. These laser links facilitate broadband internet connectivity.
Further enhancing its capabilities, the Rassvet system is designed to operate without the need for special satellite terminals. Military expert Yury Knutov highlighted that this feature, coupled with the advanced laser communication, sets Rassvet apart. He also suggested that mobile devices could eventually connect directly to the Rassvet satellites.
Developed by Bureau 1440, a Russian aerospace company, Rassvet is intended to provide global broadband data transmission. The project is part of Russia's national initiatives focused on the digital economy and governmental digital transformation, with development planned through 2030. The first 16 Rassvet satellites were successfully launched into orbit in late March.
