Russia Launches Starlink Rival
24 Mar
Summary
- Russia deployed 16 satellites for its internet network.
- Rassvet aims to provide broadband to remote areas and aircraft.
- The project seeks to offer a domestic alternative to Starlink.

A Russian private space company, Bureau 1440, has successfully orbited the initial 16 satellites for its "Rassvet" broadband internet network. This initiative is designed to provide a domestic alternative to Elon Musk's Starlink, aiming to serve remote areas and aircraft.
The company reported that all deployed satellites are functioning correctly and are undergoing system checks before moving into their designated orbits. This deployment follows earlier test launches in June 2023 and May 2024, which successfully tested prototype satellites.
Bureau 1440's project, launched in 2020, plans to grow its constellation to over 250 satellites by late 2027 and eventually around 900 by 2035. The network aims to expand connectivity in regions with limited ground infrastructure and support internet access for long-distance transport.
Russian officials have expressed skepticism about Starlink, viewing it as a potential Pentagon communication system, especially after its use by Ukraine in 2022. Rassvet receives government backing and utilizes Roscosmos for launch services.
