Summary
- Valve now provides necessary drivers for Windows on Steam Machine.
- Dual-booting is not yet supported, Windows installation wipes storage.
- Valve does not officially support Windows on Steam Hardware.
Valve has made it possible to run Windows on its Steam Machine gaming hardware by releasing the necessary drivers. Previously, Steam Machines operated exclusively on the Linux-based SteamOS, known for its gaming focus and performance. Users can now install Windows, though this process currently requires wiping the machine's entire storage, as dual-boot functionality is not yet available.
Valve has stated that a SteamOS installer supporting dual-boot will be released in the future. Despite not officially supporting Windows on Steam Hardware, Valve's decision allows users the freedom to choose their operating system, a core principle of PC gaming. Community support will be available for those encountering issues with Windows installations.
