Robot 'Superman' Outruns Human Speed Record

Unitree has introduced a groundbreaking humanoid robot, dubbed 'Superman,' designed to surpass human physical capabilities. This advanced machine demonstrated a top running speed of 12.66 meters per second, slightly faster than Usain Bolt's record sprint speed. Additionally, 'Superman' can execute a two-meter standing jump, showcasing remarkable agility and power.

The development of 'Superman' occurred in just over three months, with Unitree planning further enhancements. This reveal coincides with Unitree's upcoming listing on Shanghai's STAR Market, raising 6.1 billion yuan ($904 million) in its initial public offering, making it the first general-purpose robotics company on mainland China's stock exchange.

This technological leap positions Unitree prominently ahead of significant robotics events in Beijing, including the World Robot Conference and the World Humanoid Robot Games. Unitree's success at last year's inaugural games, where its robots won four gold medals, emphasizes the rapid progress in its technology, with speeds improving from 4.78 m/s last year to the current 12.66 m/s.

The advancements in China's robotics sector are supported by a substantial national investment strategy, aiming to channel 1 trillion yuan ($148 billion) into high-tech startups over two decades. Meanwhile, the U.S. faces calls for a national robotics strategy to maintain competitiveness and grapple with national security concerns regarding foreign-made robots.
