- Robotics startup allegedly used Airbnb for unauthorized prototype testing.

- Lawsuit alleges deceptive booking for commercial use, not residential.

A San Francisco robotics startup is facing a lawsuit from an Airbnb host alleging extensive property damage. Sean Donovan filed a suit on May 26, 2026, seeking more than $12,000 from The Bot Company. Donovan claims the startup's employees rented his home through Airbnb for "robotic prototype testing."
Donovan discovered the alleged damage when he observed "bundles of wires" and a large robot on the premises during the rental period in April. The lawsuit details numerous damages, including paint and floor damage, a damaged doorframe, and water marks on a dining room table. It also notes that cabinets and drawers were emptied and items were moved.
The suit further alleges that the company "deceptively booked as short-term rental, rather than correctly booking for commercial use and filming." The Bot Company, founded in 2024 by Kyle Vogt and Paril Jain, has raised over $300 million but operates with a low profile. This incident highlights the risks of using residential properties for experimental purposes without explicit host consent.
