Robot soldiers are here: Can we trust AI in war?
18 May
Summary
- Humanoid robots are being deployed in military operations.
- AI can now plan military operations and act as decision support.
- Human soldiers remain vital due to battlefield complexity and battery limitations.

The concept of robot soldiers, previously confined to science fiction, is rapidly becoming a reality, according to Professor Kenneth Payne, a strategy expert at King's College London. Humanoid robots have reportedly been deployed in military theaters, and AI systems are increasingly capable of complex reasoning on the battlefield, echoing scenarios from "The Terminator."
AI is also transitioning into a crucial decision support tool for military planning, with reports of chatbots aiding in strategic operations. While AI excels in areas like chess and poker, Professor Payne notes that "theory of mind" calculations and nuanced strategic thinking remain areas where humans currently outperform AI, though this gap is narrowing.
The current global "arms race" dynamic is driving the adoption of these technologies. The immense scale of potential autonomous robotic systems and the speed required in domains like cyber warfare necessitate autonomous responses, pushing towards AI integration despite ethical concerns.
While AI-powered warfare could reduce human casualties by eliminating emotions like rage and fear, it raises significant ethical dilemmas. The question of accountability for AI errors, particularly in civilian-involved situations, is a major concern. Furthermore, a "bloodless" war for one side might lower the political threshold for initiating conflict.
Regulating dual-use AI technology poses a substantial challenge, as the same code can power civilian applications and military hardware, making covert development and rapid deployment possible. Despite these advancements, practical limitations such as battery life and the unpredictable nature of physical battlefields ensure that human infantry will remain essential for the foreseeable future, likely working alongside AI companions.
Instead of a fully automated war, the future battlefield is envisioned as a collaborative environment, with AI acting as support systems akin to R2-D2 alongside human soldiers like Luke Skywalker. This hybrid approach leverages AI's analytical power while retaining human judgment and adaptability on the front lines.
