The 2027 Rivian R2 is poised to be a pivotal vehicle for the brand, targeting an aggressive opening price of approximately $45,000. This new electric SUV significantly pares down its design and components compared to the R1 models.
Key to its cost reduction is a simplified electrical architecture, integrating multiple functions into a single super-chip and drastically reducing wiring. The battery pack utilizes larger 4695 cells and a 'treehouse' design for electronics, enhancing manufacturing efficiency and repairability. The motor design is also simplified for easier assembly.
While steel springs replace the R1's air suspension, the R2 retains semi-active shocks for a balanced ride. The unibody construction and large die-castings further contribute to cost and weight savings. Despite feature reductions from prototypes, the R2 aims to deliver a distinctly Rivian driving experience, offering capable off-road performance and a commanding interior view.
Deliveries for the Rivian R2 are slated to begin in spring 2027, with the lowest-priced model starting at $45,000. Launch editions will be dual-motor AWD, requiring an additional $5,000. Advanced driver-assistance features, including hands-free driving, will be available, with Level 3 eyes-off capabilities expected in early 2027.
