CEO: Autonomous EVs Will Unlock Radical New Vehicle Forms
19 Oct
Summary
- Rivian prioritizes autonomous vehicle software development over immediate profitability.
- CEO envisions autonomous tech enabling radically different vehicle designs.
- Autonomy is expected to drive the majority of miles in personally owned vehicles.
Rivian is fully committed to advancing its autonomous vehicle software, a strategic decision that may postpone the company's profitability goals. CEO RJ Scaringe highlighted that autonomous technology is key to developing radically new vehicle forms, moving beyond the company's current offerings like SUVs and trucks.
Scaringe expressed excitement about the future of transportation, stating that autonomy opens up significant design opportunities and unique user experiences. He believes this technology will shape the next decade of mobility, allowing for dreams and innovations previously unconsidered.
While many have previously promised a revolution in vehicle design driven by autonomy and electric powertrains, these concepts largely remained in the prototyping phase. However, Scaringe's comments arrive as functional robotaxis are operating in numerous cities globally. The maturation of autonomous software, coupled with decreasing EV component costs, signifies a more tangible shift.
Rivian faces substantial development ahead, including scaling its R2 SUV production. On the autonomy front, the company has a driver assistance system and aims for "point-to-point navigation" without driver intervention by the end of this year, still under supervision. Ultimately, Rivian plans to deploy fully autonomous robotaxi versions of its R2 SUV on ride-hail apps.
However, Scaringe emphasized that the majority of future autonomous driving will likely occur in personally owned vehicles. He stated that around 95% of miles driven in the U.S. are in owned vehicles, and this societal norm is unlikely to drastically change even with advanced autonomous capabilities. This perspective fuels Scaringe's vision for the design of future autonomous, personally owned Rivian vehicles, though specific designs remain under wraps, with the next model series dubbed 'R4'.
