Reddit Tests New Audio and Video Experience
18 Aug
Summary
- Reddit is testing a new video and audio experience.
- Users can listen to posts in the background.
- The test is available on iOS and Android apps.
Reddit is currently testing a "video Reddit" experience designed to bring popular posts to life through audio and video. This feature will allow users to listen to Reddit posts in the background, a format observed on other platforms like TikTok and Reels. CEO Steve Huffman noted the potential for spoken Reddit content to be highly engaging.
The initial tests are focused on select English-language posts and are accessible via Reddit's iOS and Android apps. Users will have the option to "read" or "play" posts, with the original text format remaining unchanged. This new format is intended to complement, not replace, traditional Reddit browsing.
Reddit's experiments with video content are not new. The platform has previously introduced native video hosting, a TikTok-style feed, and video comments, which now constitute over 10% of video posts. The current tests are early experiments aimed at understanding user needs and maintaining authenticity to the Reddit platform.
