The platform acknowledges the cultural significance of pseudonymity but emphasizes that this verification feature is entirely voluntary. Its primary goal is to empower users and subreddit moderators to more easily confirm the veracity of stated identities, thereby mitigating the proliferation of false information. The checkmark signifies verified identity, not an elite status or special access.

Currently, Reddit is manually verifying profiles, with plans to transition to a third-party system in the future.
