Reddit Shuts Down RSS and Public API
1 Oct
Summary
- Reddit will end RSS feeds on November 13, 2026.
- Public API access will cease in March 2027.
- Changes aim to combat automated scraping and abuse.
Reddit is implementing major changes to its platform access, with RSS feeds set to be discontinued on November 13, 2026. Following this, public API access will also end in March 2027. These decisions stem from the company's efforts to combat large-scale scraping and automated abuse that have utilized these features.
The company has recommended that moderators utilize its developer platform, Devvit, for essential alerts, such as moving common alerts to Discord Relay. For general users who relied on RSS for following subreddits or receiving notifications, Reddit acknowledged that there is no direct replacement.
Beyond RSS, the public API, which enables software to interact with Reddit, is also winding down. New API access requests will stop on October 31, with existing access being removed starting January 12, 2027. Community bots are encouraged to migrate to Devvit, with migration funding and support available. Additionally, access to Old Reddit will become more restricted, limited to logged-in moderators and recent users.
These actions follow previous measures, including restricting the Internet Archive's access in August 2025, also attributed to AI companies scraping content. Reddit's partnerships with Google and OpenAI indicate a selective approach to AI access, prioritizing licensed entities while tightening general content boundaries.
