Summary
- New tool recovers deleted info from local AI chats.
- Researchers found usable data in device memory.
- Tool aids cybersecurity investigations of AI use.

Researchers have developed an experimental tool named ORISA that can recover deleted information from local AI chat sessions. This tool searches device memory for remnants of conversations, even after the chats themselves have been erased. In one experiment, ORISA successfully reconstructed 26 fictional facts from a set of 100 that were initially provided to a simulated note-keeping AI assistant.
This development fills a gap in cybersecurity investigations, particularly concerning AI assistants run locally on devices. The lack of centralized logging for local AI can make evidence of malicious use difficult to trace. ORISA leverages process memory to reconstruct conversation sequences, aiding in forensic analysis. However, its effectiveness diminishes over time as memory is overwritten, and the primary advice remains not to share sensitive information with any chatbot.
