Readwise Challenges Kindle with Social Reading App

Readwise, a company focused on tools for dedicated readers, has introduced Readwise Books, a new platform currently in beta. This service aims to offer a more engaging reading experience, comparing itself to "Strava for reading" by tracking reading duration, volume, and pace, and enabling social sharing among users.

The platform's development was driven by a desire to improve upon existing e-reading and book social networking services. While initially conceived as a way to enhance the Kindle experience, Readwise's founders identified a greater market need for a superior alternative to Goodreads, a platform widely disliked by its users.

Readwise Books integrates features for tracking books, rating, and reviewing them, with a notable capability to sync with Kindle accounts by analyzing user reading progress. The company has also successfully negotiated agreements with all five major US publishers, ensuring a competitive book catalog upon launch.

With the growth of digital reading, especially among younger demographics and on mobile devices, Readwise believes its timing is opportune. The availability of new E Ink hardware also supports their strategy, potentially allowing them to leverage existing devices rather than building their own e-reader.

Early user feedback suggests Readwise Books offers a more aesthetically pleasing interface and beneficial tracking features compared to competitors like Kindle and Kobo. Despite minor bugs and some initial confusion regarding Kindle integration, the platform shows strong potential for encouraging increased reading and social engagement.
