ReactOS Masters NTFS: Windows Alternative Nears Beta
20 Oct
Summary
- ReactOS can now install directly onto NTFS partitions, a major step forward.
- This achievement clears a long-standing barrier for the open-source OS.
- The project, largely volunteer-driven, remains in alpha after decades of development.

The open-source operating system ReactOS has achieved a significant development milestone, now supporting direct installation onto NT Files System (NTFS) partitions. This advancement removes a critical, long-standing hurdle for the project, bringing it closer to its anticipated beta release.
Historically, ReactOS installations were restricted to FAT32 partitions. The implementation of an NTFS driver, a filesystem integral to modern Windows since its introduction with Windows NT 3.1 and standardized with Windows XP, is crucial for ReactOS's goal of achieving binary compatibility with Windows Server 2003.
While this is a major step, ReactOS developers caution that the new driver is not yet feature-complete. It currently lacks performance-enhancing caching, journaling capabilities, and robust security support, indicating that users should still exercise caution due to potential undiscovered bugs.
This development follows years of incremental progress. Read-only NTFS support was introduced in 2016, and boot support for NTFS was added to its bootloader, FreeLoader, in 2022. The ReactOS project, largely sustained by volunteers, continues its decades-long effort to reimplement an operating system from scratch, remaining in alpha status.
