Meta's latest smart glasses, the Ray-Ban Meta Audio, have ditched cameras to address significant privacy concerns that plagued earlier models. The absence of cameras makes the new glasses less intrusive, removing the 'creepy' perception associated with recording capabilities.
These audio-focused glasses now offer navigation assistance powered by Meta AI, which, while not always perfect, successfully guided the wearer back to their starting point. The AI agent provides turn-by-turn directions, and user requests are saved in the Meta AI app.
Available in styles like Burbank and Clubmaster, the glasses are lightweight, with the Burbank model weighing 43 grams. They feature transition lenses, good speaker quality for music and ambient sounds, and excellent call quality. The 12-hour battery life supports all-day use without needing earbuds.
While live language translation is possible, it requires accessing the Meta AI app. The company insists that public backlash over facial recognition and recording did not drive the decision for audio-only glasses, but removing cameras clearly enhances user comfort and daily usability.
