Portal Space Systems announced on April 9, 2026, that it has successfully closed a $50 million Series A funding round. This significant investment, co-led by Geodesic Capital and Mach33, follows a $17.5 million seed round raised a year prior.
The new capital injection is designated to expedite the development of the company's innovative spacecraft, including Starburst, a highly maneuverable bus, and Supernova, designed for rapid orbital transfers utilizing a solar thermal propulsion system.
Funds will also be allocated to establish a new 52,000-square-foot production facility in Bothell, Washington, scheduled to open in June 2026. This facility is projected to have the capacity to produce 12 Supernova and 16 Starburst vehicles annually.
Portal Space Systems has already launched its Mini Nova payload on the Vigoride-7 mission, testing key avionics technologies. The company plans to launch its first Starburst spacecraft by late 2026 and its first Supernova in 2027.
Beyond technological advancement, the funding aims to diversify Portal Space's customer base, with strong initial demand from the defense sector. The company is also actively pursuing international partnerships, particularly in Japan, Australia, and Europe, with support from Geodesic Capital.
Future opportunities being explored include supporting orbital data centers and contributing to NASA's Artemis lunar exploration campaign, specifically with in-space assembly and logistical needs. The company intends to grow its workforce from 40 to 100 employees by early next year.
