Sony is transitioning to an all-digital future for its gaming consoles, announcing that physical disc production for new PlayStation games will cease in January 2028. Following this date, all new game releases will be exclusively available for purchase digitally through the PlayStation Store. This strategic shift reflects a significant evolution in consumer habits, with digital downloads already making up 85% of full-game software sales on PS4 and PS5 platforms in fiscal year 2025.
The company's decision also includes the closure of its digital storefronts on older systems. The PlayStation 3 store will cease operations in select markets later this year, with global closures for both the PS3 and PlayStation Vita stores scheduled for next year. While players will no longer be able to purchase new digital content on these systems after the closures, previously acquired games and content will remain downloadable for the foreseeable future.
