A growing player discontent is leading to a planned "PSBlackout" protest organized by the games preservation group DoesItPlay. This economic and gameplay boycott is scheduled for the week of August 23, urging PlayStation users to power down their consoles and avoid all online activity on Sony's platforms. This initiative arises from player frustration over several recent decisions by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The primary catalyst for the protest appears to be Sony's recent announcement that it will cease physical disc sales by 2028. This news, coupled with a significant PlayStation Network outage that left many players unable to access their digital libraries for nearly half a day, has fueled community backlash. A "Don't Kill the Disc" petition has seen significant traction, accumulating close to 350,000 signatures.

However, the effectiveness of such player-organized boycotts remains uncertain. While DoesItPlay acknowledges that a week-long blackout may have minimal impact on publishers and developers, they aim to give players a voice. Critics suggest that short-term boycotts might not exert sufficient financial pressure on Sony to alter its long-term strategies, as such actions typically require sustained effort to achieve meaningful change.
