PlayStation Users Face Feature Lockout Without Age Check
21 Apr
Summary
- Age verification is now mandatory for UK and Ireland PlayStation users.
- Players must verify age by June to retain access to voice chat.
- Sony partners with Yoti for mobile number or face scan verification.

Sony is beginning to enforce the UK's Online Safety Act by requiring age verification for PlayStation players. Starting in June 2026, users in the UK and Ireland will lose access to voice chats, messaging, parties, and other third-party communication services if they have not completed this verification. Broadcasting and gameplay sharing to platforms like YouTube or Twitch will also be affected.
To facilitate this, Sony has partnered with Yoti, a company that will handle the age verification process. Players can verify their age using methods such as a mobile number, a face scan, or by providing identification. This requirement is part of the broader implementation of the Online Safety Act this year, a measure also adopted by Microsoft for its Xbox users in the UK last year, who also utilize Yoti for age verification.
