Pixel HiLight: More Flash Than Functionality?

Google's latest Pixel 11 Pro phones introduce HiLight, a novel notification light on the device's rear. This feature, replacing the temperature sensor on prior models, aims to bring back a beloved element from older phones like BlackBerry, offering customizable color alerts.

However, at its launch in 2026, HiLight's functionality is notably restricted. It currently supports custom colors only for incoming calls from pre-assigned contacts when the phone is face down. Additionally, it lights up in a color swirl when the Gemini assistant is activated in the same orientation. These limited uses raise questions about its practical utility.

Several competitors have implemented more sophisticated notification systems. For instance, Nothing's phones utilize "Glyph" LED lights and panels for diverse alerts, including timer countdowns and Uber arrival times. Other devices feature mini-LED displays for gaming and information, and older foldable phones used cover screens for notifications.

There is potential for HiLight to evolve, especially with Google's history of enhancing features through Pixel Drops. Future updates could enable HiLight to signal flight price drops, task completions like Google Drive uploads, or appointment reminders. Integration with third-party apps, such as indicating new WhatsApp messages, could further boost its usefulness.
