AI Learns to Split Tasks: Local vs. Cloud
3 Jun
Summary
- New hybrid system distributes AI tasks between local devices and cloud.
- Sensitive data can be processed locally, enhancing privacy.
- This move could significantly reduce expensive cloud computing costs.

Perplexity has unveiled a new hybrid system for its Personal Computer AI agent, enabling devices to function as decentralized data centers. Starting in July 2026, this system will automatically determine whether AI tasks should run locally on a user's device or be processed by more powerful cloud-based models. Routine tasks and sensitive data, such as financial or health information, can be managed on the local device, thereby enhancing privacy. For computationally intensive tasks, the system will still leverage cloud servers.
The underlying technology is designed to be hardware-agnostic, working across various platforms including Intel and Nvidia silicon. This approach aims to reduce reliance on expensive cloud infrastructure for AI computations. Perplexity argues that routine AI processes should not consume the same data center resources as complex requests that genuinely require advanced AI models. The Personal Computer agent is currently available on macOS and will soon be released for Windows.
