Oracle Data Breach Exposes 20 Million Records
6 Oct
Summary
- Texas AG reported 20 million individuals' data compromised.
- Exposed data includes medical details, addresses, and Social Security numbers.
- Hackers allegedly aimed to ransom U.S. medical providers with stolen data.
An apparent data breach has reportedly affected approximately 20 million individuals, according to a recent announcement from the attorney general of Texas. The exposed information is said to include sensitive medical details, personal addresses, and Social Security numbers.
This situation developed after initial reports last year suggested a breach at Oracle Cloud. At that time, Oracle denied any compromise, stating the leaked credentials were not from their cloud system. However, subsequent information indicated a breach occurred on a legacy server, not part of the Oracle Cloud infrastructure.
The exposed data, which involved health records, had an alleged aim of holding it hostage for ransom payments from U.S. medical providers. Oracle's medical clients notably include government entities like the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
