OpenAI Unveils "dots": Your 24/7 AI Work Partner

OpenAI introduced "dots," a novel AI agent, at its DevDay conference. This "always-on" digital assistant is engineered to continuously work on projects, acting as a tireless digital partner for employees and businesses alike. CEO Sam Altman highlighted dots as an AI that learns preferences and can collaborate in teams, enabling humans to focus on more complex work.

Unlike traditional AI models requiring prompts, dots operate autonomously based on requests. This includes monitoring customer service, reviewing code, analyzing experimental data, or drafting social media content. A demonstration showcased voice interaction via phone calls. Dots utilizes OpenAI's latest GPT-6 Astra model and can access the internet, control devices, and integrate with over 4,000 apps upon user authorization.

Users can name and customize their dots, which feature cute digital avatars. These agents operate from cloud servers in virtual workspaces, not directly on personal computers. OpenAI plans to introduce text-based interaction via phone. Initially, dots will be available through enterprise-focused paid plans, Pro and Business Premium, priced at $200 and $125 monthly respectively.

While dots offer proactive background research using read-only app access, safety measures are in place. Built-in rules and customizable user-defined rules ensure tasks are managed appropriately, requiring approval for sensitive actions. Users can monitor progress and redirect dots as needed through an Activity View.
