16 Jul
Summary
- OpenAI debuted its first consumer device, the Codex Micro keyboard.
- The $230 keyboard allows control of OpenAI's AI coding agents.
- This launch diverges from expectations of a smart speaker debut.

OpenAI has launched its inaugural consumer device, the Codex Micro, a $230 miniature keyboard. This peripheral, developed in partnership with Work Louder and available through OpenAI's Supply Co. store, is designed to give users direct control over Codex agents.
The Codex Micro features 13 RGB-lit Agent Keys to display status and customizable Command Keys for frequent actions. A unique rotary dial allows adjustment of the AI's "reasoning level," and a joystick facilitates the launching of common workflows.
Codex, a popular platform with over 3 million weekly users in April, is increasingly utilized for non-coding tasks. OpenAI has recently introduced updates to integrate Codex more broadly into daily work routines.
This device connects via Bluetooth or USB-C, is compatible with Mac and Windows, and includes 32 interchangeable keycaps. Pre-orders indicate an estimated ship date of July 24. This release contrasts with earlier reports suggesting OpenAI's debut device would be a smart speaker intended as a home AI companion.
